Located on the serene southeastern tip of Phuket, Cape Panwa is not only a peaceful coastal retreat, it’s also the perfect launching point for unforgettable island-hopping adventures. From iconic destinations to hidden tropical gems, there are incredible islands just a short boat ride away that promise stunning views, vibrant marine life, and crystal-clear waters.
Here are some of the most breathtaking islands you can explore on a day trip from Cape Panwa:
Phi Phi Islands
A world-famous icon, it need little introduction. Known globally for their dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise lagoons, and vibrant coral reefs, these islands are a must-visit when staying in Phuket. A speedboat ride from Cape Panwa gets you to Koh Phi Phi Leh, home of the famous Maya Bay, made iconic by the film The Beach. While Maya Bay’s access is now regulated for preservation, the surrounding areas offer spectacular snorkeling and sightseeing. Keep an eye out for playful macaques along the shoreline on Monkey Beach!
Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Phai)
Just northeast of Phi Phi Don, Bamboo Island is a quieter, less commercialized gem. With powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters, this island offers the ideal setting for a peaceful beach escape. Bamboo Island is perfect for snorkeling right off the beach, with a reef that begins just a few meters from the shore, picnicking under the shade of casuarina trees, and for photography lovers, thanks to its postcard-perfect scenery. It’s a great stop to combine with a day trip to Phi Phi or nearby lagoons.
Pileh Lagoon
Accessible via boat and nestled within Phi Phi Leh, Pileh Lagoon is often a highlight of any island-hopping tour. Surrounded by high limestone cliffs, this hidden lagoon boasts still, jade-colored water that’s ideal for a peaceful swim or kayak session. What makes Pileh special? It’s protected from waves, making the water incredibly calm with water so clear you can see the sandy bottom, even in deeper parts. What’s more, it’s only accessible by boat, preserving its untouched natural beauty.
Similan Islands
A diver’s dream and great for ocean lovers, a day trip to the Similan Islands is a must. While these islands are a bit farther from Cape Panwa (accessible via a full-day speedboat tour), they offer some of Thailand’s best underwater experiences. Known for world-class diving and snorkeling with incredible visibility and diverse marine life, you’ll see massive granite boulders, white-sand beaches, and deep blue waters with regular sightings of sea turtles, manta rays, and colourful reef fish. Due to their protected status, the Similan Islands are only open to visitors from mid-October to mid-May, so plan accordingly!
